MOMOs, a popular Nepali dumpling, has its origins in Tibetan influences. It was traditionally brought by Tibetan traders coming through Nepal. With time, Nepalese took it up and gave it some changes until it became what we enjoy today whereby you find different spices were filled stuff inside plus many types of sauces for dipping. This food item has made its way into the culture among Nepalis as they blend traditionalism with modernization through their cooking methods that are unique in the world as we know it today.
Today, lot’s of locals and tourists are became a huge fan of these delicious, Juicy and meaty dumplings called MO:MO. Let’s explore the best way to make this momos at home. You can also check my delicious Red Lentil Curry.
Required Ingredients for the Best Homemade MoMo:
For the Dough:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Water (as needed)
For the Filling:
- 1 lb ground chicken (Mutton, Beef, Pork or based on your taste)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 inch ginger, minced
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1/2 cup finely chopped cilantro
- Salt and pepper to taste
How to make the best Momo at home? Step by Step Guide:

First prepare the Dough:
First you have to mix the flour with gradually adding water to make the dough. Also you have to add little salt like half spoon of salt. After making the perfect, smooth, elastic dough cover it and rest it for about 30 minutes. You have to put the Momo Steamer in fire with add some water in the lowest compartment. Remembere the momo steamer should be like the picture shown below.

Make the Filling:
In another large bowl mix the gro8nd meat with onion, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, cumin, coriander, salt and pepper. Mixed it well so all the ingredients are combined. In here you have to put some oil in a small utensils and heat it with adding some, cumin seeds and turmeric powder and when it became hot, pour it over the mix. It increases the taste and flavour. Keep in mind, that you have to left a tiny space in momos, so that the air could pass through that hole, while steaming, like showing in the picture.

Now Shape the MOMOs:
First divide the dough into small balls and then roll each ball into the thin circle, which is about 3 inches diameter which is called small “PURI“. After this put the spoonful of fillings in the middle of puri and fold it from one corner then seal it perfectly as per the picture shown below.
- Steam the MOMOs:
Now you have to put all the momos in the steamer container and the flame should be in medium or high. You can steam over boiling water for about 15-20 minutes until the dough of momos became perfectly cooked.
- Serve:
After 15-20 minutes of steaming, you should off the flame and bring out the momos, and serve it with the pickle (ACHAR), which is specially made with tomatoes and soya.

How to make Pickle for Momos? Let’s make it easily at home:
Momo’s Pickle is easy to make, First boil some perfectly ripe tomatoes around 5 minutes, in another pan roast some soyabeans, Chily, Black peppers and Cumin seed. After roasting it blend it with mixing with boiled tomatoes, for making it fine paste. You can add Green Coriander for giving the Nepalese Taste. And serve it with the momos and enjoy.
