Essential Tools for Formula One Crews

No matter the modern tracks or classic tracks like Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi to Albert Park in Melbourne or Great Britain and the Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo, the one thing all F1 tracks have in common is the pit stop.

A F1 team has 23 strong crew who have their own important role that doesn’t change. A single mistake can cost a team the race. The fastest teams can carry out a pit stop in just under two seconds.

Having the right tools is very important for the team’s success:

Front and Rear Jacks

If you want the F1 races then you may know about the job of jackman. If you don’t watch, They are people who replaces the tires of the car. Their job is very important to the success of a race car driver. The cars rip around the track at upwards of 200 miles per hour so, their tires will inevitably wear down and need replacing.

So, the jacks lift the frame of the car to ensure tires can be changed in time. A pit stop for four ties and fuel can last 12 to 16 seconds, and a stop for two tires and fuel may take 5 to 7 seconds.

Pneumatic Wheel Guns

Pneumatic wheel gun is also called impact wrenches or air wrenches. They are power tools that is used for compressing air to loosen or tighten lug nuts on wheels.

Here are some key characteristics of pneumatic wheel guns:

  • Power Source: They rely on compressed air supplied by an air compressor.
  • High Torque: They can deliver significantly more torque than a standard hand wrench, making them ideal for stubborn or rusted lug nuts.
  • Speed: They can remove or tighten lug nuts much faster than a hand wrench, saving time and effort.
  • Ease of Use: They are relatively easy to operate, requiring the user to simply hold the tool against the lug nut and pull the trigger.
  • Variety of Options: They come in various sizes and with different torque outputs to suit different needs.

Before the recent focus on pitstop speed, gunmen would give a sign when they are done by raising a hand in the air and when the jack men see the two hands at their end of the car, the car would be lowered back onto the floor. When the chief mechanic see four hands and both jacks out of the way, he would release the car. Now, the action of raising a hand in the air is considered to take too long, so a button is fitted on the wheel gun. The flick of a switch or button on the side of the gun shaves off valuable hundredths.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is very essential for working in any mechanical environment. They are protective gears used for safety. In F1 car racing, cars travels in very high speeds, so PPE is must have.

Most pit crew will wear ear defenders, knee pads, goggles, and heavy duty gloves. Because every member of the team plays a pivotal role in helping the driver reach pole position ensuring the correct PPE is worn is a must.
